This summer, I had the privilege of interning at Goodmans LLP in Toronto, and words cannot fully encapsulate how remarkable my experience was.
From the very first day, I felt embraced by everyone at the firm, from the senior lawyers to the receptionists, and even the late-night cleaning crew. Everyone I encountered contributed to making my time at Goodmans special, and I truly felt like I belonged.
I was placed in the Business Law Three Group, which specializes in corporate matters, particularly in areas of personal interest—entertainment and technology law. As a legal intern, I had the opportunity to work on files, which gave me a deeper understanding of what lawyers do daily.
I was grateful for the chance to engage in meaningful legal work, whether it was proofreading important documents, assisting with formal agreements, or updating the firm’s document management system. With each task it ignited a desire to pursue corporate law.
One of the most memorable moments of my internship was meeting and working with the Honourable Michael Moldaver, a former Supreme Court Justice now serving as in-house counsel at the firm.
My conversation with him was eye opening. During our various chats we discussed psychodynamics, and he even provided me with inspiration for my undergraduate thesis.
Despite being an intern, I was treated like the summer and articling studnets at the firm. I had my own office, the freedom to rotate through different sections, and even had the chance to go on a day trip with the other students to the cottage of the firm’s Chair. These experiences allowed me to build lasting relationships with people at the firm, including associates like Jennifer Linde, Ayesha Khanna, Shadi Varkiani, and Victor Liu.
Before this internship, I couldn’t picture myself in the corporate world. As someone with a softer personality, I wondered if I would fit into a fast-paced enviroment like big law. But this internship solidified my confidence. Not only did it affirm my interest in corporate law, but it also reassured me that I can thrive in this space.
My time at Goodmans will be one I will remember for a lifetime. This summer made it clear that I am on the right path, and ready to pursue a career in law with newfound certainty.
