Chanel is facing a lawsuit over its online augmented reality makeup tool. On July 22, 2025, the technology company Zugara filed a complaint claiming the luxury brand copied its patented method. The case focuses on Chanel’s Try-On virtual makeup feature, which tracks a user’s lips and eyes through live video and overlays digital makeup in real time.

Zugara argues the tool mirrors its utility patent No. 10,482,517. The patent covers a process that captures live video, detects facial features, and applies digital cosmetics. Zugara also claims Chanel promotes the feature through tutorials and prompts, which they say encourages infringement .
This is not Zugara’s first legal dispute. Earlier this summer, the company sued Estée Lauder over similar technology. That case settled out of court on July 9, 2025. As augmented reality tools become standard in online shopping, patent battles appear to be growing alongside them.
